A taste of Abruzzo – we take a look at what makes this area so special and include a delicious recipe and a very tempting saving for those looking to buy....

As an estate agency here in Abruzzo working with many people from outside Italy our philosophy has developed over the years beyond selling properties into an understanding that it is the lifestyle that counts and that should someone appreciate this Province were we work then a property can always be found.
In that sense we have worked towards promoting Teramo and its Province almost above the properties on our website, realising that this area on the northern coast of Abruzzo remains to some extent largely unknown despite its wonders.
The Gran  Sasso with the highest peak in all of the peninsula of Italy sits like a guardian angel in the background of all our lives, its mass offering us its protection from inclement weather at times and creating an extensive microclimate stretching to the coast which makes this area of central Italy famous not only for its mountain cuisine but also for its extensive vineyards and premium wines but for its excellent oil production producing some of the finest EVO  appreciated  widely in Italy for its flavours.

Abruzzo recently at the national wine competition in Verona brought back 14 medals for its wine as many of the producers here have moved to quality instead of quantity.  The areas of vineyards surround famous centres of excellence such as Colonnella are producing very many of the best DOC wines. An area of beautiful hill top towns taking you back in time with spectacular views of the sea on one side and the grandeur of the central Apennines to the west.
An area of Abruzzo that allows you in one day to ski at the resorts above the beautiful village of pietracarmela and to depart there and be sitting on the coast sipping on a fresh Trebbiano d’Abruzzo  over a plate of freshly caught sea food. An area of contrasts with beautiful places to stay. Many on estates owned by the same families for centuries. Offering restaurant services that are recognised nationally for their quality and service, their knowledge and love of food often produced on their own land or within the area.

From the coast with its traditional seafood recipes

Traditional fish antipasto of the Giulianova cooking tradition
Ingredients (for 6 servings):

3 kg. prawns, 1 kg squids, 200 gr. clams, 300 gr. sole fish, 1 bunch of minced parsley, juice of 2 lemons, 1 glass oil, salt to taste. For the green dressing: parsley, tuna fish, anchovies, capers, chili peppers in vinegar, a couple of cloves garlic, vinegar drops to taste.

Boil separately the prawns, the squids, the clams and the soles. Dress with oil and lemon. Whisk the herbs and the remaining ingredients with oil and season with salt and vinegar. Tip: remember to add a bit of salt while the fish is cooking. It is best to use a lot of parsley and little garlic to obtain a pleasant flavor.

To the hills and mountains where traditional recipes abound such as the famous Teramo chitara with a sauce rich with tomatoes and minute meatballs, the Timballo of Campli or the Le Virtu the traditional pasta meat stew when  larders were emptied because new fresh food was available and a celebration meal rich in new vegetables and meats. click here

The capital city of the Province, Teramo is a small friendly city, rich with museums and historical buildings. Its largely pedestrianised historical centre has a large main shopping street leading down to its Cathedral square.  Its a city full of life, once a year the youth handball championships are held with young people from more than 40 countries of the world arriving and opening up the summer season of festivities. With theatres and choral societies this is a cultural and vibrant city which predates Roman times .click here

This is a brief look at an area of Italy that once you visit remains with you, its people renowned above all for their pride and friendliness, their joy in visitors that come here and appreciate what this province has to offer. Humble pride and almost surprise in the fact that people are interested in their traditional way of life and their culture. That their famous “sagres” that run all through the year from chestnut festivals in the Autumn, Christmas markets and Spring fairs to harvest festivals with traditional foods.

Travelling here is remarkably simple, the Abruzzo airport in Pescara is a 35 minute drive from the city of Teramo, Ancona airport is just an hours drive and you will find that Teramo is just 150 kilometres from the Roma Ciampino airport(90 minute drive) on a picturesque and quite motorway. Teramo is in fact the closest Abruzzo city to Rome on the Coastal Apennine side of the region.

Through this web page we are offering for the months of May and June 2010 a special offer within the area of Colonella, relating to properties both old and new that we have to sell in that area, a famous and beautiful hilltop town just overlooking the coast (2km) click here

In fact whilst at the La Dolce Vita show we met the owners of this stunning  place to stay just outside Colonella and having visited them can also recommend this is a good centre from which to explore the area.

For all sales on those properties we are offering a fixed fee service  on our part on signing of a preliminary contract of 1000 euro to take you through to the final act. Which represents a significant saving on our usual fees.
